BrownBagCPE provides live CPE courses for Oregon and Washington CPAs and other financial professionals in Portland, Oregon and Clark County, Washington. Since 2003, we have offered continuing education courses taught by experienced teachers and financial professionals with expertise in their fields.

Instructors


James Jurinski

Jim, a local Attorney-CPA admitted to practice law in both Oregon and Washington as well as before the U.S. District Court and U.S. Tax Court, has been an accounting professor for over 20 years. Also a CPA (Washington), Jim is a member of the American Association of Attorney-CPAs, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Tax Section and Estate Planning Sections Oregon Bar Association.

Jim has taught business courses to both undergraduates and MBA students at numerous college campuses throughout the Northwest including Washington State University-Vancouver, Lewis & Clark College and Portland State University, and Western Washington University. Currently on the faculty at the Dr. Robert J. Pamplin Jr. School of Business Administration at the University of Portland, Jim teaches courses in Family Business Planning and Tax Planning.

A coauthor of the books Tax and Financial Planning for the Closely Held Family Business, and Transferring Interests in the Closely Held Family Business, published by the American Law Institute-American Bar Association, as well as a dozen other books, Jim has also published over two-dozen articles in national journals and magazines on business, tax, and estate planning topics. He also writes a column “All In The Family” for the Journal of Real Estate Taxation.

Jim is on the panel of arbitrators of FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and has developed course materials on mediation and arbitration for the American Management Association used nationwide. Jim has served on an AICPA subcommittee dealing with professional ethics issues.

Lucinda Giorgetti

Lucinda R. Giorgetti is an attorney in Oregon and Washington with a sole practice limited to family law. A well-established sole practitioner, Lucinda has also worked with the firms of Gevurtz Menashe in Portland, Oregon, and with Blair Schaefer Hutchison & Wolfe LLP in Vancouver, Washington.

Lucinda has a B. A. degree in political science from Radford University in Radford, Virginia. She has an M. A. in U.S. History and political science graduate hours from Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia. After teaching secondary school for several years, she attended the University of Virginia as a doctoral student in Legal History where she taught as a teaching assistant and instructor for two years. She is a Ph.D. candidate, ABD. Upon coming west to Oregon, she worked for several years in Eugene as the administrator for the Oregon Eye Associates, and for a brief time before law school in the Cardiology Department administration at OHSU. Lucinda attended law school at Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of Law and passed the Oregon and Washington Bars in 1995.

Lucinda is an active member of the Simpson Inns of Court, and a member of the Washington and Oregon State Bar Associations, the Multnomah County Bar, the Washington County Bar, and the Clark County Bar.

Mark Huglin

Mark Huglin, Attorney-CPA, practices law in the Kruse Way law firm Draneas & Huglin. Before working as a lawyer Mark worked in the tax department of one of the “Big 4” accounting firms. He is admitted to practice law in both Oregon and Washington. Mark, a graduate of Oregon State University, went to law school at Willamette University. Mark also earned an LLM in Taxation from New York University—this program is the most prestigious graduate tax program in the nation.

Mark has extensive experience in the area of retirement plans. He has created and advised clients about various types of qualified and non-qualified plans including 401(k) Safe Harbor Plans. Besides his expertise in the retirement plan area, Mark’s practice includes drafting wills and trusts and administering estates. He also represents taxpayers in both income and estate tax audits. Finally, he has many years of experience in advising clients in general tax and business matters.

Mark is the past-President of the Taxation Section of the Oregon Bar Association and is also a member of the Business and Estate Planning and Administration sections of the Oregon Bar Association.

Mark is also a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants and has been active on many of the society’s committees including the Accounting Careers Committee, the Taxation Committee, and the Estate Planning Committee. He is a coauthor of Buying and Selling a Business in Oregon (2000).

John Lenz

John Lenz CLU, ChFC, CFP® - President of Lenz Financial Group in Portland, Oregon, John is a frequent continuing education speaker in the financial services industry for 30 years. The Lenz Financial Group employs over a dozen people who specialize in the design and underwriting of life insurance, annuity, and Long Term Care (LTC) insurance for more than 800 agents in the Pacific Northwest.

A past board chair of Insurance Designers of America, John is also a past board member of the Oregon and SW Washington Financial Planning Association. John has been an expert witness in nearly 20 arbitration, mediation, and legal cases involving annuities and life insurance products.

David MacLennan

David MacLennan, FCA ASA EA MSPA COPA. The owner of the Creveling MacLennan Company in Portland, Oregon, David is a consulting actuary who specializes in defined benefit plans. David has twenty-six years experience in the administration of qualified retirement plans. Self-employed since 1993, David focuses primarily on defined benefit and cash balance plans, along with profit sharing plans, 401(k) plans, and cross-tested profit sharing plans. David is a graduate of Reed College, Portland, Oregon.

Mike Radakovich

Mike Radakovich, CLU, ChFC, and CFP,® Mike is a highly respected Financial Planner with many years of experience in the insurance and financial services industry. Mike focuses on helping successful, small business owners and hardworking individuals and their families develop well-rounded financial plans and manage their assets. Mike is the founder of Summit Advisors NW, a local wealth advisory firm located in Portland, Oregon offering securities and advisory services through KMS Financial Services, Inc.

Brian C. Setzler

An Oregon CPA since 1989 and member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants, Brian C. Setzler holds a B.A.in Business Administration (Cum Laude) from Washington State University with an emphasis in accounting, and an MBA in Sustainable Business from the Bainbridge Graduate Institute (BGI).

A former Controller and CEO, Brian has over 20 years of business experience in public accounting, consulting, teaching, and private industry. His experience includes “Big 5” audit and consulting work, as well as corporate and individual tax planning and preparation. As a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor, Brian enjoys helping clients set up and maintain quality accounting systems. Brian spends part of his time as an accounting and finance teaching assistant at BGI, and instructs other CPAs on the subject of sustainability, accounting and business.

Brian is the founder of TriLibrium, a triple-bottom line CPA firm that focuses on serving individuals and organizations dedicated to creating a sustainable economy. He also works as a consultant to local, socially responsible, and sustainable business organizations and others that aspire to become environmentally efficient.

J. Michael White

Mike is a former, nationally acclaimed AICPA instructor known for his dry wit and droll humor developed from his early days in Chicago. Mike is a graduate of Notre Dame, where he was an outstanding basketball player. He is the recipient of numerous outstanding teaching awards received throughout his career. Mike has an extensive knowledge of accounting and auditing topics gained from his more than 30 years as a college professor and career as a CPA and CFO. Over the years, Mike has been a frequent presenter on a variety of CPA topics. Mike is a graduate of Notre Dame, where he was an outstanding basketball player.
